CrossFit Regionals are finally upon us! The WODs have been announced and the events kick off this weekend with the Pacific, California, and Southern Regionals. Next weekend, The Barbell Press will be attending the Atlantic Regional in Atlanta, Georgia and the weekend after, we will be up in Albany for the East Regionals (Look for us in our black and teal “The Barbell Press” t-shirts and come say hello!). Coming from New York, we’ve been attending the East Regionals every year since 2012 and it’s always a blast.
Here are our top 5 reasons to go to the CrossFit Regionals:
The Inspiration- These are the top 20 strongest athletes in the region. While many of us are still working on a muscle up, they are repping them out in a weekend jam packed with seven workouts. But the amazing feats of strength that they can easily accomplish isn’t as inspiring as watching these beast athletes hit a wall and continue to push right through it. These wods are designed to test the best of the best and there are moments when athletes succumb to their humanness. Watching the crowd rally around an athlete who is struggling to hit that last rep is exciting and inspiring. It’s almost like the crowd can carry an athlete when it seems an athlete can do no more. And suddenly, you’re a part of that athlete’s success, you’re inspired, and you leave with the sense that anything is possible.
The Swag- There are tons of freebies and huge discounts at the many different booths in Vendor Village. Whether you are looking for gear, apparel, or food, the top brands associated with CrossFit and fitness are here selling their stuff. You’ll have an opportunity to sample the different proteins that you’ve heard of, try new paleo bars, and buy as many CrossFit tanks and t-shirts as you can carry. RomWod, whom we recently affiliated with, has a booth at the Regionals so check them out and let them know how much you’re loving the extended two week free trial they’ve offered readers of The Barbell Press. (And if you leave with 20 new t-shirts and no jeans to wear them with, make sure to check out Barbell Apparel online for jeans that actually fit weightlifters).
The Eye Candy- This one is self-explanatory! It’s a crowd full of CrossFitters! That means traps and six packs, and butts and quads. I’m not sure there is another sport where the crowd is as fit and as good looking as the athletes they are cheering for. If you’re single, the CrossFit Regionals are a great place to pick up a guy or a girl who is just as into fitness as you are.
The Photo Ops- Whether they are current competitors, or past, the athletes mingle with the crowd. And everyone is happy to take a photo with you that you’ll upload right to your Instagram account. At last year’s Games, my husband got a photo with Russian Olympian Dmitry Klokov, and I got to take a photo with CrossFit Games athlete Dan Tyminski and his equally strong Olympic Lifter girlfriend, Ricklynn Long. And the Regionals events have just as many athletes whom you’d like to meet!
The Competitions and Prizes- The athletes aren’t the only ones who have a chance to win at Regionals. Many of the booths at Vendor Village give you the opportunity to win different prizes. Last year at the East Regionals, an Assault Air Bike was up for grabs for whomever could rack up the most calories on the bike in one minute. And other booths have done pull up contests, push up contests, sand bag slam contests, you name it! Even if you don’t have a shot in hell at winning, it’s fun to give it a try. And sometimes, if you put forth amazing effort but come up short, they throw you a free t-shirt anyway. If you’re a CrossFitter, you’re a competitor and these little challenges make for a really fun day.
Hope to see you there! Make sure to say hi if you see us walking around.
